MARYS MEALS

S

For the last seven years we have been operating a meal 4 meal scheme made possible by the incredible work of Mary's Meals. This means that for Every sushi burrito or bowl you buy we donate 9 pence to Mary's Meals to feed a child in hunger.

Mary’s Meals provides life-changing food to some of the world’s poorest children every day and in the process they also gain an education as the meals are served at school. Today the charity feeds over 2 MILLION KIDS worldwide. They use local volunteers and buy local resources for the ingredients, so it also helps build local communities up and supports their economy.  It's a really beautiful model and one that we firmly believe is an answer to world hunger, and so we are honoured to be a part of this in our own wee way.

Currently Happy Maki's donations go to a school feeding programme in Thanthwe, Malawi .

You can find out more about Mary's Meals below but we highly recommend watching their 30 minute documentary called Child 31, linked below.

FORMER PARTNERS EDEN REFORESTATION PROJECT

Our work with Eden reforestation stopped in October 2023 as they took a more holistic and rounded approach to environmental regeneration, the new largely increased cost of planting a tree was no longer viable for us to commit to, but we wish them the best in all their projects and it was a real pleasure to support them over the years.  They do incredible work and you can read more about them below.

Eden Reforestation Project, reduce extreme poverty and restore healthy forests in Haiti, Madagascar, Nepal, Indonesia, Mozambique and Kenya. By employing local villagers to plant millions of trees every year, benefits can be felt in the community and in the environment. The destruction of healthy forest systems contributes to a multitude of different problems.

Trees offer benefits such as a habitat for animals, purification of water sources, flood water and soil erosion management and aiding in replenishing the soil with nutrients needed for farming. When a farmer’s crops fail, and their farm is no longer a viable source of income, nor can it support their family, they often have no option but to relocate. This means moving into overcrowded cities looking for work, and unfortunately many are forced to resort to selling themselves, or their family, into slavery just to survive.

The work done by Eden Reforestation Project goes far beyond trees being purely the “carbon sink” they are often promoted as. As a start, Eden Reforestation Project begin by hiring locals to plant trees. This offers them the chance at a decent income and the opportunity to provide for their families. As the reforestation effort goes on, healthy forests begin to emerge and all the negative effects of deforestation begin to disappear.
